Brief Description

The course equips students with pedagogical skills and professional values required for effective teaching at secondary level. The course provides the students with hands-on experiences in syllabus interpretation, planning for teaching and micro- and peer teaching. Educational information and communication, and media are developed and used to teach in varying pedagogical situations.

Objectives

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. Analyze and relate theories about teaching and learning to the

          Secondary school classroom practices

2. Exhibit professional, effective and practical use of the knowledge acquired in their day-today school and classroom practices.
3. Interpret and enrich the secondary school syllabuses related to the subjects they teach.
4. Prepare schemes of work and lessons plans using acceptable formats
5. Demonstrate practical teaching methodology through micro teaching and school practice.

9.  Produce and maintain the different types of instructional media.

Detailed course description

The concepts of teaching and learning ( 4hours)

The definitions of teaching from different schools of thought; the relationship between the concept of teaching and the methods of teaching; learner-centred vs teacher-centred approaches.

Preparing to teach (4 weeks x 2 hours = 4 hours)

The relationship between and objectives national broad of education and secondary school education analysis of secondary school syllabuses; schemes of work: definition; formats; importance of scheming.  Lesson plans; definitions; formats; importance of lesson planning. Formation of teaching objectives and/or competences; the questioning; the questioning technique: use of questions in teaching; formation of quality higher order questions; distribution of questions during the lesson.

General methods of teaching ( = 4 hours)

Analysis of key concepts; approaches, methods and techniques. Learner-centred methods and approaches: Participatory approach; Project, dramatization; Brainstorming;  discussion; group work; story telling; dramatization; role play, debate; Experiential approach: Field trips/educational tours, nature walks/study; experimentation; demonstration; case study; inquiry approach: Case study, library projects, knowledge inquiry; critical reading; reading; Problem solving approach; project; Integrated approach; project; strengths, limitations, teacher/learner roles and techniques for effective use of each method. Criteria for selecting teaching methods, designing learning and assessment tasks.

Teacher centered methods  2 hrs)

Lecture; chalk- and talk; teacher dominated demonstration and storytelling; criticism and justification of teacher centred methods.

Innovation in teaching ( 02 hrs)

Cooperative learning; portfolio as a tool for learning and assessment; micro-teaching; multi-grade teaching, team-teaching, distance learning [modular system].

Lesson assessment and evaluation 2 hrs

Authentic assessment; designing assessment tools and criteria.  Table of specification.  Introduction to reflective practice; what, when and how to reflect; importance of reflection in teaching; keeping a reflective journal.

School practice and classroom management = 2 hrs; teacher as a leader of teaching and learning; drawing timetables; developing and managing school/class records; techniques of classroom organization, management and control; gender responsive pedagogy; the secondary school learner; individual learning and developmental needs.

Educational technology

• The concept of Educational Technology, evolution and forms (2hrs)
• The role of Educational Technology in the teaching/learning process  (1hr)

Theoretical underpinnings of educational and communication technology

Constructivism, pragmatism, social learning, Experiential learning, Multiple intelligences (1hr)

Communication in Education

• The concept of communication (1hrs)
• The communication process and barriers to effective communication [Disability, Teacher, Environment, and Learner related barriers]  (1hr)
• Verbal communication and non-verbal communication [Sign Language, body, communication boards, interpreters, braille   (1hr)
• Improving communication in the teaching/learning process - inclusive instructional  materials, participatory teaching methods, child to child approaches, non - discriminatory language etc. (1hr)

Two dimension instructional media - Instructional writing boards (chalkboards, bulletin boards, electronic boards, and charts (electronic & traditional)(1hr)

         Three dimension instructional media – realia, models, and digital 3Ds (1hr)

         Projected media in education- Slide, Overhead & LCD projectors (1hr)

         Production, Maintenance and Use of Instructional Media and

         Display of  Instructional Media (1hr)

           Electronic Educational Technologies

         Analog –Tv, DVDs, Radio, aided teaching (1hr)

The course is delivered through Interactive lectures; micro-teaching; group presentations; plenary discussions; tutorials; library reading; demonstration lessons,; peer coaching; team-teaching; lesson observation
