Welcome to AGG 2103 (Statistical methods in Geography), a course taught by Dr Francis Wasswa Nsubuga and BCM in this semester. This time around you will be introduced to current knowledge on statistical problems and statistical methods peculiar to geography. This course emphasizes fundamental concepts of statistical methods which are applicable to spatial and non-spatial data typical in geographic analysis for decision-making. The objective of this course is to provide students with a sound introduction to such rules and procedures and stress their application with specific emphasis on geographic problems. Topics covered include nature of data, descriptive statistics and data exploration techniques, distributions, and sampling, methods of analysing data of different kinds and inferring information and conclusions about a statistical, correlation analysis, hypothesis testing and simple regression analysis. In all cases, the spatial nature of data and its analysis will be emphasized.

In addition to this study guide, additional information for lectures and practical’s will be provided on KELMS from time to time. It is essential that you access these files over the internet and print out your own copies. Please note that it is essential to attend the classes (or view lectures online) and to take notes at lectures as much more additional material is provided during lectures than appears in these notes.
